Mahatma Gandhi was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist and political ethicist who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British rule. He fought to maintain and protect the rights of Indians in South Africa, and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. In this bronze sculpture the the artist has portrayed Gandhi as he dressed in India as a devout Hindu. In South Africa he was never quite comfortable having to dress in a suit and tie.
