Something Ethnic by Talia Ramkilawan (2021) Price Guide: €5,000
Winning Bid: R26,000.00
Talia’s pieces are made with a rug hooking technique where she uses wool, and or cloth, on a hessian canvas. This artwork is framed in an ash timber wood and is measured at 90 x 102.5 x 6.5cm.
Central to Talia Ramkilawan's practice is rug hooking, a slow, accumulative process with which she creates her "tapestry adjacent" wall pieces. Her more recent preoccupations include intimacy, vulnerability and softness as expressed in everyday life.
"Something Ethnic" is a 2021 piece which formed as part of Talia's presentation at the Also Known As Africa art fair in Paris in the same year.
Garlands are used as a symbol of peace, love and acceptance. This work is a celebration of not only that but garlands are found to adorn deities, women and men from immemorial, they are used to welcome a guest arriving after a long time.
The significance of handing over the garland in the work is to capture the acceptance within my culture and myself and vice versa. A welcoming of an old friend, and exchange of acceptance with my culture and me. It's a commitment to understanding one another.
